The first time when you have to save Sirius Black from the

The first time I did this I had the exact same problem. What you need to do is get your Patronus through the dementors, don't try and kill them all or Sirius will just die.
Use your first few Patronus's to create a gap in the centre of the dementors, then with the rest you need to charge through them, avoiding hitting them as this wastes the patronus.
Hit the dementor that is attacking Sirius, you have to do this a few times before it dies.
It takes patience so hang in there and keep trying.
