There are several ways to get free characters in Marvel Battle Lines without having to spend real money. You can get them by playing Campaign mode, Special Ops, and Trials Simulation. You can also get Characters as rewards for participating in events, you can check to see what events are currently available at the 'Event Portal' menu.

If you visit the in-app shop and go to the 'Daily Offers' tab you will be able to spend gold to get character's cards. Also there you can go to the 'Card Pack' section and spend gems to claim a single card pack 3 times a day.

Under the 'Special Ops' section you will be able to spend the points you earned from the Special Ops mode on card packs. You will also be able to spend the points earned from Trials Simulation mode on card packs.
