Below is a collection of hints and tips that will help you to progress in the game. These include why you should know your team and playing online. As well as these hints and tips we also have a mini-guide here which goes into more details on some of the tips we have below:
In order to succesfully run the ball on offense you need to know how to use the players on your team to get the best out of them. This means knowing their skills and abilities and understanding their strengths and weaknesses. Check out our Choosing a Team Guide to see the ratings of all the teams in Madden NFL 20.
The key to marching up and down the field on offense is to diversify your offense so it is not predictable. Rifling deep passes downfield every play is fun and will lead to huge plays and quick scores but it will also lead to a lot of turnovers. Instead mix up pass plays with running plays and add in the odd quarterback scramble to keep your opponent on their toes. Check out our Passing Guide to learn about the different types of passes a quarterback can attempt.
Always double-check your play art before the ball is snapped to ensure you know what needs to be done. The play art will show you what your blockers are doing, which hole needs to be hit, and the number of defenders in the 'box'. Use the right trigger to check the play art.
Running plays on offense have a lane often referred to as a 'hole' which you must hit for the play to be successful. At the snap of the ball you will sometimes notice other lanes that look more appealing but these are often a part of the play you are running that is designed to decieve defenses. If you attempt to improvise during a play your blockers won't be in sync with you.
Always protect the ball when an opposing player is nearby to prevent a turnover. Although protecting the ball will slow you down and make you more likely to be tackled by the opponent it will mean you keep possession and move forward on the field. On consoles you protect the ball by using the R1 or RB buttons. Check out our How to Avoid Tackles Guide to learn about the different ways you can avoid being tackled.
Don't spam 'Sprint' (R2 and RT buttons on consoles) as doing so will burn up much-needed stamina and could result in costing you a touchdown. Save your sprints for when you see an open space and use the sudden burst of speed to get ahead of the defensive line to reach it.
