Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded is the latest installment in the Kingdom Hearts series, released for the Nintendo DS. It is a remake of the original Kingdom Hearts Coded released for mobile phones (which was not very accessible, I believe it was only in Japan). The story takes place right after the events of Kingdom Hearts 2. Jiminy finds a secret message in the journal (the one that was previously erased, except for "Thank Namine), saying "Their hurting will be mended when you return to end it". He goes to Mickey, who digitizes the data and finds a bunch of bugs in the system. To fix these bugs, he asks the Sora inside the data to visit the worlds and fix the bugs, to solve their problem, so the game follows the data Sora as he ventures out to fix the journal.
If you've played Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for the DS, then you already know the graphics this one has. They're roughly the same, and I'd say those two games are pretty good for DS games graphically. I especially enjoy the cutscenes, which are much like PS2 (And they have clips from the older Kingdom Hearts games which look pretty good, besides being slightly pixelated). As a result, the graphics get a solid 9 (Not 10 since there's no improvement from 358/2 days).
I have to give this game an 8 in sound. For two reasons, mainly. One: The data Sora is the same as the Sora from Kingdom Hearts 1. However, since the voice acting is done now, when the voice actor for Sora is older, his voice is a lot deeper than the original Sora when he first did that. Granted, that's not his fault, but it still is kinda weird to hear the KH1 Sora sound like KH2 Sora. Two: Some of the background music to the worlds is slightly remixed. Even though it's slight, the originals were just so much better. So it only gets an 8.
I am VERY happy to see that they decided this time around to go with a battle system like Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, in which you have Command Decks. It provides much more variety in attacking, and magic is way more useful now. Keyblades are now associated with "Overclock", in which you get more abilities as you attack and build up the meter, which is interesting. Leveling is still kind of like 358/2 days, where you install panels, but there's much more customization this time around. It's good to see them get it right.
As great a game this is, the storyline certainly doesn't last that long. Of course, I played this a LOT every day, but still, I beat it in 3 days. I kinda speed rushed, but this game still shouldn't take more than a week for the average-hardcore gamer. Now granted, I haven't completed it 100% yet (far from it actually), but the side stuff can get repetitive. And there is no multiplayer really, besides Tag Mode (which, is quite useless except to get one trophy). So..yeah.
Overall, this game is very fun, and I recommend that you play it if you are a fan of the Kingdom Hearts series. For those who have never played them, you will be utterly confused playing this game, so I wouldn't recommend it. 358/2 days and Birth By Sleep are good to play before this as well if you want a thorough understanding of the ending, but not necessary. This game helps explain some things and is a wonderful addition to the Library of DS games.
