Only Quests so far are reasons to spend coins. However you must first complete the quest log in the task book before anything with spending coins become available. It will soon after Lisa and homer go skiing.

The ability to spend coins is unlocked after completing the quest where you make homer and Lisa pretend to go skiing.
The coins can be used to purchase Decorations for houses as well as Buildings.
