When you get to the farm of the person you want to follow, look at the top of the screen. To the right of the farm name, there is a smiley face and under that something that looks like a ribbon/flag.
Click on the the bottom icon (ribbon/flag thingy) and you are now a follower! You can visit that persons farm anytime, but there are limited follower slots available :|

I want to go to a farm without the news paper thingy, how do I do that?

I see the smiley face but no flag or ribbon. Does this mean I am unable to add a followers?
