Scattered everywhere are shiny objects in various different colours that look like flowers. Make sure you gather as many of these things as possible as you progress through the game as there are certain areas and pathways in each stage that are gated off by giant clams and the only way they become unlocked to allow you access is by spending shiny objects. The amount you need to spend is displayed above the clam.
