gba_dude answered:

You use the stones on the type of Pokemon that the stones are equvilent to. Like a fire stone should be used on a fire type Pokemon. But the stones don't work on every pokmon, only some. Example: A fire stone works on Growlithe but not on a Charmander.

cyber_john3000 answered:

Fire Stone: Vulpix, Growlithe, Eevee
Thunder Stone: Pikachu, Eevee

You use them on different Pokemon to make them evolve. Here:

Fire:
Growlithe - Arcanine
Eevee - Flareon
Vulpix - Ninetales

Thunder:
Pikachu - Raichu
Eevee - Jolteon

Leaf:
Gloom - Vileplume
Weepinbel - Victreebel
Exeggcute - Exeggutor
Nuzleaf - Shiftry

Water:
Poliwhirl - Poliwrath
Eevee - Vaporeon
Staryu - Starmie
Shellder - Cloyster
Lombre - Ludicolo

There's also other stones: Sun an' Moon.

You use Fire, Leaf, Thunder, Water, Sun, and Moon stones to evolve certain pokemon. These Pokemon include:

Eevee (You can use Fire, Thunder and Water on Eevee)
Growlith (Fire)
Vulpix (Fire)
Pikachu (Thunder)
Gloom (Leaf or Sun)
Sunkern (Sun)
Clefairy (Moon)
Jigglypuff (Moon)

And there are many more aswell. There are LOTS of Pokemon who are evolved by stones, so don't throw them out.
