Question for Pokemon Emerald
Help! I'm stuck. I have the first four gym badges but I can't get to fortree (or something like that) city because the ocean is in the way. If I go west from mauvile (or whaterver) city I get to the water. Please help me!

If you had remembered what Norman said you wouldn't have had to ask this. Norman is the fifth gym leader. When you beat you go to Wally's house and his dad gives you surf. And get the amulet coin from your mom after you beat your dad.

You should get HM03 Surf from Wally's dad.
His house is Petalburg City(near the gym).

You need to defeat your father at his Gym and get the HM03 (Surf) from Wally's parents.

Well, if you were paying attention to what May/Brendan was saying after you exited the Larvaridge gym, they said to go to your fathers gym and battle him. After you battle your father, Wally's dad catches up to you and gives you HM 03, surf. Teach surf to a Pokemon and you can get across that patch of water. Rate this answer.

You need to defeat the fifth Gym in Petalburg (the gym leader is your dad). After that, Wally's parents will give you the HM Surf. No problems.

1. You need to fight your dad in Petalburg City
2. Then Wally's dad will come in (or you need to go to his house to the left of the
gym - I can't remember). He will give you HM03: SURF.
3. Use Surf to swim (or surf) over the water.
4. After the water, go up as soon as you can until you reach grass where you
cannot get through with a bike - you have to walk (a biker is just before the
grass and tells you this).
5. Go up, through the grass - then keep moving up until you come to a huge
building - the Weather Institute.
6. Fight Team ???? (Aqua or Magma - one of them) at the Weather Institute and
collect the Pokemon Castform from a guy on the second floor after you beat
Team ????. Now you can go across the bridge.
7. Go across the bridge to the right of the Weather Institute and you will eventually
come to Fortree City.
