The name actually suits itself- it's a system that gives you a gift. You never know what you'll get. Of course, you need to hook up with someone else to activate it... Also, if you go to New York Times Square or any other famous place, and go to Pokemon Rocks America or what ever, you can get tickets to go to special places and you can also get certain pokemon.
If your wondering how to get mystery gift, first get at least four badges, then go to Petalburg City (you need to, anyway...) Go in the Pokemon Center and talk to the guy next to the PC, and Say to him: Mystery Event Is Exciting. Then, you'll have Mystery Gift.

Its for when you use the wireless system you can get different tickets for Pokemon and gifts.

Well mystery gift is when you put you're gameboy and there gameboy and you give each other items like revive!
