Im using an emulator and trying to use the Pokemon cheat I get the Pokemon and go to catch and when I click on my pokeball the game freezes

It could be any number of things causing the crash. Try a different emulator, a different cheat code, or a different ROM. Also, there may be a master code associated with the cheat that you need to turn on as well. There are also different types of codes for different cheating devices and world regions, so you may want to verify you're using the right type of code.
