I believe the old duplication methods still work as long as you're using a link cable. You just trade over one good one(on Player 1) for a crappy one(b/c it will disappear-on player 2), and when it says "saving, don't turn off the power", do just that on the one with the good poke originally, but not on the one with the crappy poke(let it finish the trade to get the good one!). The Pokemon you wanted to duplicate should now be on both GBA's, the crappy one gone forever. As for Items, have the poke hold the item to duplicate. It may take a few tries to get the timing right, so pratice first with pokes you can part with!! Be careful and good luck!
