if you gather shards then you can trade them for stones at the treasure hunters house outside of Mossdeep
Red: Fire
Blue: Water
Green: Leaf
Yellow: Electric

There should be a small house on an island near the north eastern most part of the map. Just go inside and take the gems to a man. He'll trade you evolutionary stones for them.
