It depends on how much the two get along
If the guy says They're very friendly. It will not take long
If he says the two seem to get along. It will take a little while
If he says the two don't seem to like each other. It will take a long time
If he says the two prefer to play with other pokemon. It will not happen

Usually 500 steps,sometimes a little longer depending if they get along or not.when that happens I leave them in longer and I usually get an egg that way.
