Bulbasaur: will be able to handle the first three gyms easily, however after that he's basically useless, and one hundred percent replaceable with nidoking or something like that. An advanced player ought choose bulbasaur, as he would be the most difficult to use constantly throughout the game. Alot of Pokemon will be super effective to it, (fire, flying, ice, poison, bug, ground and psychic (because bulbasaur is grass poison throughout evolution)) and is only super effective to water, ground, rock, and grass. Not a very good trade off, an advanced player will have no problem using this Pokemon, as s/he will have no problem balancing out the team since s/he should know the way types effect other types and s/he should know how to balance teams without a problem or even needing to look it up really..

Charmander: he will be a difficult starter to use from the beginning, but will be superb later on, an intermediate player Should chose a charmander as he can learn dig early on, (in Cerulean to be exact) and thus, can easily conquer Lt. Surge's gym. After that everything is practically a piece of cake, since he will be able to be taught a vast variety of techniques through TM's and HM's. Now, even though charmander is my personal favourite for nostalgic reasons, he is not the Pokemon I recommend primarily for strategy. That Pokemon is:

Squirtle: an easy start. Capable of dominating the first gym, catch an oddish and the next gym is out of the way. Diglet, BAM, Lt.Surge is out of the way, and like previously mentioned with Charmander, the rest is a cake walk. Now why is squirtle better in the long run you may be asking? Well, he will be able to dominate the rival's bulbasaur (teach him ice beam (gotten from the thirsty girl on top of the celadon dept. Store)). Not only is this an advantage when battling your rival, squirtle will have no problem decimating Bruno, and Lance, single handedly (when fully evolved of course and at around lvl 50)with a team like Jolteon, Blastoise, Hypno/Gengar, the league (and rival) will be no problem! Loreli: use jolteon Bruno: use blastoise, Agatha: use hypno/gengar, Lance: use jolteon for gyarados, and blastoise for the rest, and use a mix for the rival.
