Introduction

FIFA 2008 is the latest FIFA game to be released, although the next game in the series, FIFA 09 will be out soon. This review aims to give to you information on the graphics, sound, gameplay and lastibility. The brilliant thing about the FIFA series is that although a new one comes out every year, you don't necessarily need to buy it. In this review, you will know why by the end.

Graphics

Very good for a Playstation 2 game. FIFA has always been noted for it's official capabilities and it's ability to have everything correct and proper. It has always been said that Pro Evolution Soccer (FIFA's biggest rival) makes up in graphics and gameplay, for what it loses in official licensing. However, FIFA 2008 has brilliant graphics which allow gameplay to be fluent, something which hasn't been perfect in previous games. Now, the graphics are more realistic than ever before. The factor that still comes as let down is the crowd - they still look like 2d drawings my little sister made. So if you're really bothered by what the crowd looks like, this may come as an annoyance. Apart from that, there really isn't too much to complain about. Another reason the score wasn't higher, is due to us moving on to the next gen consoles like the PS3 and 360, the PS2 obviously cannot compete with those type of extraordinary graphics. However, if I'm basing this review on the features on the specific console, you won't get much better than FIFA 08.

Sound

Realistic crowd noises including chants, booing and cheering. The thing which shows a real improvement from last year, is that the crowd actually sing songs related to the team that is playing. For example, 'Come on you Spurs' can be heard in Tottenham matches, 'Blue Moon' in Manchester City matches and the chants are even accurate in foreign leagues. The booing and cheering can sometimes be slightly out of sync - for example, the cheers might happen a few seconds after they should do. If you score a goal, the cheers will sometimes start to come when the opponents are kicking off again.

The music on the game is as always - very varied and effective. Some songs can be very irritating, but I suppose it just depends on what kind of stuff your into. That's why I think it's a good idea to vary the genres, because all types of music fans will play the game. So, why not have something for everybody. I would however like to see some more popular songs, instead of just random songs that most people have never heard of.

Gameplay

Very good. For the first time, I believe that FIFA can actually give Pro Evo a definite challenge. The gameplay is much more fluent, much more accurate, and feels a lot better to play. New features such as being able to bully your opponent off the ball, and shield the ball from your opponents add to the realism. The 'forward runs' feature can be executed to perfection, making your goals look all the better on the replay. Passing, crossing, and shooting is all very good. The 'Be a Pro' mode allows you to have a more personal control. You can;t control the other plays, meaning you really do have to work as a team. It can be slightly annoying having to give the ball to the Ai, and then have to watch them stroll down the wing and get tackled. However, it is a brilliant feature. It does need a bit of work - a more advanced season mode would be prefered. However, very good gameplay, which gives it another 8 out of 10.

Lastability

This is the brilliant part of football games - not just FIFA, all of them. They can last for ages. The 'My Squads' feature means you can change squads to bring them up to date with real life transfers. This way, the game will never get old. The only thing that doesn't change, is club kits. You can carry on playing FIFA forever really, as the gameplay doesn't really get boring. You can score from many different angles and techniques, so there's always new things to try.

Overall

Overall, a fantastic football game. For the first time, FIFA can actually rival Pro Evolution Soccer on gameplay and graphics. It is already streets ahead in terms of layout, style, and licensing. It will always be more real, and that is the reason you should buy FIFA 2008.

Final Score: 82%
