Introduction

Dragon quest 8 is a game that proposes himself like a diversion from the classic Final Fantasy game line. It's an interesting effort from the Level 5 game house. But it's also a very good game, fun to play and with something extra that makes a game a great game. But it's not a great game. Let me explain why.

Graphics

It's not a mystery that the entire game background resembles the Dragon Ball style, after all, we are talking about the same designer: Akira Toriyama! The entire game is much more like a cartoon than a classic role-play game, and this is a nice thing. Cities are big and detailed, monsters are well constructed, everything is good... But it comes with a prize: a loading time a little too long for my tastes, but after all it's not a great price to pay, you need only a little more patience.

Sound

Good music, and wonderful voices for all the game characters, except for one. Why the main hero, our hero never talks in the entire game? I found this entire thing very strange, and I never found a reason for that, because a PS2 can easily handle the hero's voice and all the other characters voices. A real pity.

Gameplay

Don't misunderstand me, this game is hard, very hard... Sometimes even frustrating. You will spend a lot of time levelling up your characters or earning money to buy some really expensive equipment, only to pass a short dungeon and fight a though boss. Then you restart gaining experience and money for the next equipment and boss. I have also to say that there are maybe too many random fights in the game. It's a game that requires patience.

Lastability

The world of Dragon Quest 8 is very big and detailed, and you will spend a lot of time exploring it. There are some side quests, but too few for my tastes. But the mini medals hunting, and the really interesting monster arena will give you some interesting and entertaining distractions to the main game, you will like them, believe me.

Overall

Well, this game is almost a masterpiece. Almost. There are some good reason to not make it a great game, like the very hard difficulty level, the long loading time and the silence of the main hero. But it's absolutely a very great game, with an interesting story, funny characters and a big, detailed world to explorer. If you can find it for a low price, you have to buy it, no doubt about it!

Final Score: 86%
