Available at the start of the game the Science Machine is is a tier 1 science station which costs 1 Gold Nugget, 4 Logs, and 4 Rocks to craft. When you stand near the Science Machine allows prototyping new recipes. Prototyping items for the first time will grant you 15 Sanity and once prototyped the items can be crafted without being near a Science Machine.
