Introduction

Call of Duty Modern Warfare announced for itself the spark of a new age of FPS; one to be dominated by graphics, gameplay, and new modes of warfare that have yet to be seen. This time around, the makers of Call of Duty release their 6th instalment into the franchise, Modern Warfare 2. Is the multi-million dollar franchise capable of living up to it's previous standards?

Graphics

I'm not going to deny it, the graphics are very solid for this game. From the blood effect that hits your screen to the all around look of environments that you get your feet wet in, Modern Warfare 2 has certainly improved upon it's graphic count. However, the new effect of the blood splatter across the screen when getting hit does a great deal to blur your vision. Though it goes for a lifelike effect, it is quite annoying when fighting other people.

Sound

Pretty solid all around, many of the weapons do sound the same after a certain time. The explosions that occur during many of the mission are pretty nice to hear and are definitely one thing that you wouldn't want to miss. As I mentioned though, the weapons do have a tendency to sound quite the same after a long time.

Gameplay

It's not bad, but it's not great. While the game has improved in some areas such as "iron sights", shooting with scopes, etc., it is mostly the same as the previous game with no drastic changes. You may be very impressed with the overall feel of the game, but take a look at certain elements of the game which can irritate. The blur effect, as I previously mentioned, is one of the worst effects of the game. Instead of the screen becoming more red tinted at the edges, the colour goes to a drastic yellowish with red spots smeared across. It's terribly annoying to have to constantly fire out of when only slightly picked by an enemy. When hit as well, the weapon you are holding jerks up, making it extremely difficult to be able to shoot precisely.
The online, while considered by many to be the best out there, is nothing short of annoyance. Instead of solid shooting action that many look for, the game ends up becoming a test of who's perks are more likely to succeed. Those who use the Ninja perk and grab a knife and pistol, entertain themselves by using an endless sprinting perk. This allows them to rush around the level with absolutely no skill whatsoever. The knife is one of the deadliest weapons of the game and what's worst is that it can kill from a far greater distance then the previous games. This allows for extremely cheap play in the game.
The shotgun can kill from quite a distance despite it's normality of close range. Another flaw in the weapon aspects of this game.
Special Ops is one of the saving graces of this game as it allows you and a friend to do special missions with one another. Working together to complete a goal is often rewarding when fighting against choppers, soldiers, and the occasional Juggernaut. But when you've reached the end of the Special Ops, what more is there to do but to go back to the Online and prestige for the 11th time?

Lastability

Probably the lowest point of the game in my opinion. If the online doesn't have you frustrated by it's lack of balanced assets, then the game will just become plain boring. Though there are achievements to unlock and do, they become dull and quite boring by level 45. To gain a level of Prestige, you must reach the hard level of 70 and trade all un-lockables in for one level of Prestige. To gain another level of Prestige, you must do it all over again. It quickly becomes boring when you do the same thing over and over again.

Overall

Overall it's not a bad game; it has it's strength such as it's overall look and sound. But aside from that, the game is a compilation of unfairly balanced online and dull, repetitive gameplay. If you enjoy FPS and you enjoyed Call of Duty 4, you will enjoy this one. If you are looking for a game that will actually be enjoyable long after you have taken off the plastic seal, steer clear of this game as it loses it's flavour a little ways in.

Final Score: 70%
