As the game starts with the animus calibration. First set your difficulty then your gameplay mode. Guided Mode is the traditional experience where you can take advantage of markers being displayed all the time and quest objectives given to you automatically. The other mode is the more challenging Exploration Mode where you have to uncover targets and quest objectives by investigating and discovering their locations manually. (Apparently, this is the way the game should be experienced) You can always change this option later.

Next, you’ll have to choose your hero - either Alexios or Kassandra. You cannot change your character for the entirety of your playthrough so choose well. There’s no advantage from one character over the other as it will only affect the story narrative and character interactions. The starting point, available quests, and overall game mechanics will remain the same.

You’ll start off in the Kephallonia Islands. Once the battle with the two thugs begin, you’ll learn how to parry here (if you still haven’t figured it out during the Intro). Defeat the two thugs with ease and you’ll have the chance to either let them off or finish them off. Take note that your choices will have permanent consequences in your gameplay so choose carefully.

After dealing with the thugs, hold X to climb up the house and open your stash. Open your inventory and wear the two basic armor pieces you have. (If you have pre-order armor or pieces, you won’t be able to see them immediately. Don’t worry since you’ll still need to proceed with the story in order to redeem and use them.) Once you have your armor on, the quest marker will point you toward the giant statue of Zeus on the top of the hill. At this point also, you’re free to explore the immediate area to gather drachmae and Materials, as well as discover new locations.

When you’re ready to continue with the story, head to the mountain. When you get near, deploy Ikaros and spot Markos in the air. Watch for the white and yellow arcs that will appear around Ikaros. It displays the general direction of quest objectives and other important objects of interest. Use Ikaros often especially after synchronizing with specific Synchronization Points or before infiltrating a hostile area.

Upon tagging Markos, head to where he is and talk to him. After the scene, he’ll send you to another errand to retrieve your money. You’ll also get the chance to select a horse of your choice. Whatever horse you choose, your character will still name it Phobos. The appearance won't matter as well if you’re planning to put a skin on him later.

In the meantime, one of Markos’ workers will inform you about Phoibe getting snatched by Cyclops’ men. This will also become one of the objectives of the following quest.
