Pokemon Dream World not a Nightmare

-- Back to the Entralink --

Once you have completed all of the activities that you want to -- or your hour has run out -- you prepare to leave the Dream World. Your game is saved by the Global Link Server and then you have some choices to make...

When you click to leave, you will be shown the Pokemon that you can add to your party and are instructed to wake up your Pokemon using the Game Sync, and then to head for the Entree Forest, where you will find the Pokemon you chose in the Dream World waiting for you!

If you also acquired any items in the Dream World you will have the option of sending those to the Entralink now.

In both cases, once you have succeeded in waking up your sleeping Pokemon, you should select the Wireless section of your C-Gear and then the Entralink and as long as you are not in a restricted area, you will Warp to the Entralink in the center of Unova!

A Trainer is waiting there to show you the ropes on connecting to someone else's world (that requires another real life Trainer at your location). You are more interested in the Entree Forest -- which is the north zone point from here -- so head there to get your new friend!

The new Pokemon will be in plain sight when you enter the area, and you do not have to battle them to obtain them, just use the action button on them, pick the ball you want to use, and it is a guaranteed capture! All that is left is naming them at that point -- and hey, you may not have realized this but you can obtain rare and special Pokemon this way, as well as Pokemon from other regions you have not even seen yet!

The Entree Forest has many areas in it, so if you do not see all of the Pokemon you know are waiting there for you, you will need to explore a little bit to find them. When you have them all, you can head back to the main area and use the Teleport Pad to the south to return to where you started from in Unova.

-- Gaming the Dream World --

The rules are simple -- you put your Pokemon to sleep in the game and then visit the Global Link website, where you can spend an hour each day in the Dream World, potentially obtaining special items, special Pokemon, and playing lots of mini-games and making friends. An hour a day -- does not seem like a lot of time with all that there is to do there, right?

Some Trainers might say that rules were made to be broken, and in the case of the Dream World, well, that may be true!

Your entrance to the Dream world is not the yardstick by which access is controlled, but the sleep time -- so if you happened to have put your Pokemon to sleep and then not entered the Dream World that day, you will find that the Global Link does not consider your visit with that Pokemon to have used up today's limit!

All that you need to do is tuck a different Pokemon back into bed, and visit the Dream World for a second time today to discover that it is as if you were not there earlier -- giving you another hour to find a new friend or two, make a new Pal or two, and find more items! Note that if you make the mistake of tucking the same one in, you will not get into the Dream World a second time -- and you can only tuck in one Pokemon a day, so be aware of that.

-- Entralink Visits --

When you visit another Trainers world via the Entralink you end up in a black and white version with certain limitations -- you cannot go into buildings, there are areas you cannot visit, that sort of thing -- but you have the opportunity to assist your friend and yourself by completing missions in their world!

Scattered around your mates world are Pass Orbs, which can be picked up and used to activate Pass Powers, special abilities that you will want to explore in depth as you find each one (we do not want to ruin the surprise of this part of the game by telling you what they are!).

Completing missions delivers rewards for both players, from increasing the size of your Entree to additional Pass Orbs. At the moment there are only 6 different time-based missions for players to complete, but rumor has it that this may change in the future!

Playing missions through the Entralink and visiting the Dream World is thought to have a hidden XP system associated with it that, when the player reaches a high enough level, may increase the number of Pokemon that can be put to sleep, the number of times per day that the player can visit, or even the amount of time they can spend there -- but nobody knows for sure how much of that is rumor, and how much is fact!

-- Dream World Adds Opportunity --

After thanking me for the information most of Trainers jumped on their notebooks and made accounts on the Global Link site using the free WiFi at the restaurant, tucking in their Pokemon in the game and preparing to visit the Dream World for the first time. I thought that was pretty cool...

It never occurred to me that the Dream World could be such a mystery to so many Trainers -- but then I suppose that after having covered so many of the aspects of the game in writing about it, and sitting in on the different news events and writing the guide for Pokemon Black I have picked up a Ph.D. in Pokemon after all...

Still, the interconnecting platforms that link the traditional Pokemon games to the Internet and as a result make the process of linking to other gamers in real life is pretty amazing...

In addition to the Dream World, Trainers can trade Pokemon in the established manner by placing them on GTS and indicating what they want to trade for, or they can use the new method and do the same thing live, allowing negotiation between the trading Trainers, which all by itself is a pretty amazing capability.

In addition to that, the WiFi side of the C-Gear on your game allows you to connect to other Trainers for video chats using the build-in camera on your DS as well as warp to the Entralink Facility.

The IR side of the C-Gear supports direct game-to-game battles, trading, exchanging Friend Codes, and doing Feeling Checks, while the Internet side of the C-Gear only supports Sync and putting your Pokemon to bed right now...

The folks at Game Freak and Nintendo have done an amazing job of expanding how we use our games, and it would be a shame if you did not at least take a look around the Dream World, and see what it has to offer you as a Trainer, right? I know a half-dozen Trainers at Harvard are glad that they did!
