The Top 10 Best Movie Depictions of Video Games

01. 'Her' Video Game Scene

While video games of this sort do not exist - yet - between the AI assistant and the unexpected dialogue with the very witty and profane NPC, this has to be one of the best movie takes on video gaming ever...

Directed and produced by Spike Jonze, and starring Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore, and Scarlett Johansson as Samantha, the voice of the new OS1 - the world's first artificially intelligent operating system.

Her is an American science fiction romantic comedy-drama that was released in 2013 in which the protagonist is arriving at the end of his divorce, but has yet to emerge into the social world as a single male.

Ironically the protagonist, a lonely and introverted man, has a career as a professional writer whose daily grind is composing heartfelt very intimate letters for people unwilling -- or more often simply unable -- to write letters of a personal nature themselves because in this near future (the film is set in 2025) the 'Net generation is all grown up and has discovered it lacks a well-developed personal and emotional identity outside of emoticons and texting!

Theodore and Samantha develop a complicated relationship as Theo tries dating, and their bond ends up growing stronger both as a result of his predictable reluctance to put his emotions out there and his increasing reliance on the OS as the sounding board for his emotions...

Plot and story-wise the movie expands from there, but the truly fascinating parts at least from our perspective include the OS itself, and Theo's serious addiction to video games as an emotional outlet and hobby.

The movie presents a technology image of games - and of gaming - that if the industry even manages to halfway attain suggests that the future will be a very interesting and entertaining place, offering a view of video games that we can only hope will one day arrive.
