why are my gems not charging?

I have grand soul gems in my inventory but when I kill some stuff it says there is no soul gem in my bag large enough for this soul. Is this a bug or something or do I need to be at a certain magic skill to store larger souls

wrasmusson answered:

Grand soul gems can't hold all souls, but I think black soul gems can

Weevil answered:

Check your inventory and make sure that your soul gems don't already have souls in them.
If you're trying to trap the soul of a humanoid, then you'll need a black soul gem (or the daedric artifact Azura's Star).

superbird5005 answered:

Are there Souls in the gems? That is what is most likely stopping you from taking the soul.

Villa Killa answered:

Wrasmusson is right, but weevil isn't: azura's star isn't big enough to hold humanoid souls, only black soul gems are

dc chais answered:

No azura's star can hold Humanoid souls. Make sure you are casting soul trap and killing the NPC within the time limit of the spell.
