There are other answers for this but oh well, I'll answer it again, friend.

During the Canvas the Castle quest, if you go through and question everyone, it's easy to get off track. The reasons for the this is mainly because every witness points at a different person because of a more personal reason. Orok gro-Ghoth will tell you that Orgnolf has been having trouble with his drinking again and ended up having an argument with the lad later that night while outside in the rain. Bittneld will tell you that Chanel spent a lot of time up in the West Tower. When he confronted Chanel, she told him it had to do with her spell research. "I suppose at the time it sounded good enough for me."

Interview Orgnolf and Chanel again, asking them what they did on the night in question. Orgnolf won't help himself in the least bit by refusing to answer questions so get his disposition up to 60 and have at it again. He'll eventually tell you that he was outside in the storm quarrelling with a delivery boy over a wine shipment and spent the rest of the night in his room reading.

Chanel won't talk much either but with a disposition of 60 for her as well, she'll loosen up. She tells you that on the night of the theft she was out in the courtyard taking star readings and then studied her charts over a glass of wine in the dining room before bed...Wait a minute, didn't two of the witnesses say that it was storming outside? Ask her about the stolen painting and she'll offer up a brief critique: "Whoever painted it could not do the man justice. He was kind and noble, which is difficult to convey on canvas."

After speaking with the witnesses and the two accused, your journal entry tells you to focus on the more physical aspect of clues. When you go search his second-floor chamber and the North Tower where Orok found him plastering himself with wine will show no evidence of the painting.

Go to the West Tower, down the hall southbound and a right from Orgnolf's room and you'll find your first clue. Behind the boxes is a trap door leading to a lower room with a painting of a chapel. Hmm, somebody's a painter in this place...

Chanel said she spent her time after star readings in the dining hall, so check in there and peer around at the north corner of the rug. Paint stains. You'd figure someone would check their clothing items before going anywhere right? Guess not. Anyway, go to Chanel's room which is just up the southern stairs from the Great Hall and check her lectern in the corner of the room. Paint supplies. Your journal gets hostile and instantly believes Chanel concealed those pain supplies and reports that you have enough clues to accuse Chanel.

She admits that truth but not the way the countess requires, raise her disposition up to 70 this time and she'll confess her maddening love for the count, how she painted the picture and her jealousy. At this point you can either go back to the countess and reveal that Chanel took the painting, you'll receive a leveled reward from 200-700 gold along with some gems and stones. If you accused Orgnolf along the way, you'll lose a fair amount and only receive 50-350. Otherwise you can tell the countess that you accused neither suspect and you'll still get 25-150 gold for being your own show of Law & Order and Chanel will stay in the castle and offer for you to come back in three weeks for you're own painting.
