I will answer your question since I am a better expert. If you continue on in the mages guild you will get a quest to find a colossal black soul gem. A person will give you several locations where altars are located that make the soul gems. If you offer an empty grand soul gem at a certain time when light pours down on it and the gem is inside. Sorry I can't be more detailed I haven't played in awhile. Hope this helps.

I will look to give you locations. Sorry I didn't finish my sentence. If the empty soul gem is inside when the light pours down it will turn into a black soul gem. P.S. I'm a better expert than Deoraven.

The light he is talking about shines every tursdays night in oblivion (or Fredas) and a place with an altar is dark fissure caverns south of cheydinhal. Also he forgot to menttion that you have to cast a soul trap spell on the altar. Note: it has to be a soul trap spell set to target not to touch.

Just complete the mages guild quests until you come across one from a necromancer, then save it away so you can dupe it.
