To connect xbox live do I need the wireless adapter or the ethernet cable

You can use either one, I personally, have an ethernet cable from my modem to my Xbox 360 because it's easier and less expensive. If you're going to use a wireless adapter, you're going to spend $100 dollars on the adapter itself. Either way, they both do the same thing, one is jut more cost effective than the other.

You can use either one, but I'm warning you that the wireless adapter doesnt have very good internet connection and is a waste of $99.99.
