Is it the spider robot at the beginning of the game? (XATM-092, I think.)
If so, use Quezacotl until the machine falls over, then run by holding L2 and R2. Or, stick around and destroy it - it will revive about 3 times, and the fourth time will blow up, when reduced to 0 hp. If not, and L2 & R2 don't work, you'll have to beat it. 9 times out of 10, Quezacotl is good for machine battles though.
(It would be more helpful if you'd say what the name of the machine is, or where you are in the game!)

all you have to do isvtouch thevscreen behind the psvita and just keep practing until you're used to it
yer mum answered:

Just hold L2 & R2

jazz*69 answered:

Push L2 and R2 at the same time.

Liake answered:

To run away, just hold the shoulder buttons. I'm not sure if you can run from bosses, but you can't run when you've got monsters on either side of you.

Guest answered:

The top answer by Scruffy is wrong, I battled that thing for the entire 30 minutes and never won, it revived countless times. Hit L2 and R2 to run away, and do it when Zel tells you to, and you should be able to escape just fine.

I doubt anyone will read this given how long its been but being such a classic I felt I should say it anyways. If memory serves the sequence is as follows, disengage, run for two screens, hold the walk button as you traverse the downhill slope so you dont get forced into another battle. When he's on the bridge, you finally have the chance to destroy him. which will in fact earn you a full 100 bonus SeeD points for your ranking when that comes to

Actually, you only have to run the first time. After you run the first time, any other battle with the mecha spider can result in its death and the 80(Or 40) GF points you get from defeating it.

If you're playing in the psp, push up with the analog stick

Guest answered:

On the thrustmaster controller you hold down what would be the start and select button not L2 and R2 because R2 just pauses the game. Hope this helps it took me an extra try to figure it out.

Guest answered:

Press the touchpad at the back in the middle with two fingers. L2 and R2 are at the top of the touchpad on the back
