Question for Halo: Combat Evolved

I downloaded "Microsoft Halo for the PC" and worked my way up to the library. That's when I needed cheats. I found the cheats on so many sites but they don't work. I did everything required, like the -console -devmode and later the tilde. The console does appear but when I enter a cheat code it says it cannot be done. Why is it so? Can anybody please advise?
Also, I keep reading about the custom edition, what is it and how does it differ from my Halo?

Try it on a easier difficulty of you can't do it, if you ARE on the lowest difficulty, replay it until you get better, I;m playing the heroic RIGHT NOW, and it's pretty hard. As for the cheats, I don't really know, haven't tried them much at all, I'm too epic for cheats.

If you have combat evolved or windows xp then these are to old if you want to do cheats then download halo custom edition but either having XP or combat evolved dosn't work with some cheats but it depends on which cheat codes.

Hop this helped. (=

I am not sure about the Windows XP, as I am not familiar in testing/using cheats on Halo: CE for the PC. Although, from what I can gather, you may have the wrong game altogether. Halo: Combat Evolved was the original game developed by Bungie and Published by Microsoft. As stated above, Gearbox Software released Halo:Custom Edition as a separate game altogether for Windows which allowed for players to modify the game and create custom maps. Cheats do not work with the original release of Halo: Combat Evolved, but only with Halo: Custom Edition. You do still need to type "-console -devmode" after the 'target' when editing the Halo CE shortcuts' properties.
