A second town center helps you build 2 settlers at the same time(one settler for each town center)..it also increses you're pop..ppl make it to incrses the defence of an area or to increse the strenth of their eco. Take for example, the portugease, by the time they reach the 5th age they have 5 town centers which means they can build 5 settlers at the same time and tat is y portugease have one of the best eco in aoe3

Having a second town center is also an advanage to help keep you alive. If you are being attacked and your town center is torn down, you will have no way to build more people. That's why you should try to always make at least one more town center away from your current one.
