The latest game in the Halo universe, from 343 Industries and Microsoft.
Halo 4 is the latest game in the Halo series. Developed by 343 Industries and designed only for the Xbox 360 gaming system, this first person shooter was released on November 6, 2012.
This game features the return of the Master Chief as the main protagonist, as well as the voice in the back of his head, Cortana. It's the first in the new Reclaimer Trilogy, and the first Halo game, aside from Halo Wars, to be produced by a company other than Bungie. The game was met with heavy skepticism by die hard Halo fans when they found out Bungie was not the developer of this game, but 220 million dollars on its opening day just means the fans were willing to give this game a chance.
Halo 4 is set four years after the events of Halo 3, in the year 2557. While Dr. Cathrine Halsey is facing imprisonment for her direct involvement in the Spartan II project, John is still frozen in cryonic sleep aboard the Forward Unto Dawn
. As seen at the end of Halo 3 on Legendary ending, the ship has come close to a planet, now revealed to be named Requiem.
For the past few years, a set of rouge covenant had been stationed in orbit around the planet, trying to figure out how to get in. As only Humans are direct descendants of Forerunners, the Forerunner planet of Requiem only began to react when Forward Unto Dawn drifted close. In an outrage that human ships were close to the planet, the Covenant attacked and awakened our hero, thus beginning our story.
As the fight against the Covenant continues, several things become clear.
- There's a new enemy to be faced on Requiem. They're called Promethean, and they're as tough as they are ancient.
- Covenant aren't the only problems to be faced here. With Cortana slowly dying from Rampancy and a Promethean leader named the Didact trying to destroy the human race, there's plenty to keep you busy.
There's more than just the campaign to play through in this game. 343 Industries has given a new spin to the multiplayer content. They've merged it with the main story of Halo 4, and given it purpose. Below are the two new multiplayer game types available for the player to have fun with.
Much like the multiplayer of Halo 2, 3, and Reach, Halo 4's war games pit players against one another online in different objective based fights. The only difference is with Halo 4, it's called War Games for a reason. The Spartan VI project has started, and this is their training. Stationed aboard the UNSC Infinity
, the new breed of Spartans are pitted against one another in these training exercises to boost their skill and get them ready for the real fight.
These are the active game types in War Games:
- Infinity Slayer
- Big Team Infinity Slayer
- Crimson DLC
- Capture the Flag
- Team Slayer Pro
- Team Regicide
- Team SWAT
The following game types have been removed from Halo 4's playlist since its release:
- King of the Hill
- Team Snipers
Each one of the game types will be explained in future Wikis.
Spartan Ops are Campaign-like missions available for either single player or multiplayer gaming. Similar to Halo Reach's Firefight gametype, these are objective oriented missions that pit you against Covenant and/or Prometheans while you do what commander Sarah Palmer tells you to. This storyline takes place 6 months after the conclusion of the Halo 4 Campaign.
For the 5 weeks following the release of Halo 4, a new episode of Spartan Ops was released every Monday at 4am Central Time Zone. This included a roughly 5 minute video furthering the story of the Spartan Ops, and 5 new missions to complete. It is currently on hold for the Halo 4 Infinity Challenge featured by Virgin Gaming.
