Hold down A to gain the momentum before a jump, then release A and you should launch off the ramp and then you can procede to do some tricks.

Hold the 'A' button to gain momentum. When you are at the tip of the ramp let go of the 'A' button. If you hold it too long and too early you will become slower or fall.
