I have just bought a fishing pole, and the fisherman won't take it from me. No more goals have come up, so I don't know what to do.?

You don't have to give it to him. You have to take it down to the docks and go down to the sign next to the big fish on a hook. Click A, and it will ask if you want to play fishing. That is what it is for. Bu completing that goal you have gotten yourself a job
