You need it in the cave of origen.
If you use it right then Groudon comes to you.
And you can battle him.
Maxie has the blue orb.

The red orb is used to control the legendary pokemon. You dont need it and you give it back to the two old people on MT. Pyre

The Red Orb is an important storyline item or as we call the key items. Later down the line you will need this particular item to help you catch Groundon a legendary pokemon that sleeps below the sea in a cave. Once you hit this part of the story you will need the Red Orb to awaken Groundon in the Cave Of Origin in Sootoplis City were you will eventually obtain your 8th badge. When you get to the room in the cave Groundon is in be sure to save first if you want to catch it if not then just defeat it which is not a wise choice but it is up to you.
