I can't get past Sootipoolis city!!!!!!!!!! The gym door is locked and this guy is in my way of getting into the cave!!! I've been stuck on this for like ever and I would really appreciate it if someone could please help me!!! Thanks.

The man sort of gives you an answer on what you have to do.
You need to go deep sea diving to find the team Magma hideout, it is not that far south of where Sootopolis city is, in a deep patch of ocean.
You must go south of Sootopolis, ther you will find a darkened section of sea. Use Dive here. Beat the Magma Hideout and then you can go to the gym.
They are half right.
You must go EAST of Sootopolis and dive
There is a small circle of land dive near there.
Beat Team magma/aqua which ever game you have
They are trying to awaken groudon.
Beware maxie/archie is tough
After you beat them go to Sootopolis
Then you go to the cave
After you beat/catch groudon you can then go into the gym
