What the heck is this mystery event, and where do I go to participate or watever?

A Mistery Event is an event Nintendo does every once in while, and it's where you can get, for instance, the famous Eon Ticket. There isn't a certain date for it, so it can be in any place at any time (but if I'm correct there was supposed to be one in NY this month). To participate you just have to go there, so try to keep informed

The mystery Event is where the Nintendo Company decides to hold their mystery Events at. Most of the time, Nintendo will hold their Nintendo Events in towns or cities in popular areas of the United States, or in places where there are a lot of people that play Pokemon. If you live in a town such as Los Angeles, or anywhere in the state of California or New York, then you can rest assured that there be a Nintendo Event held there sometime soon. Other times, Nintendo will be generous and hold Nintendo Events all over the United States, Japan, and many other countries. These massive events are usually held by the person who has the game going to a store like Toys 'R' Us, and doing what ever they need to do to get the Pokemon. Look on Pokemon.com regularly for information about any upcoming Nintendo Events. Hope this helps.
