I recommend using a Squirtle. It can help beat the first gym, Brock's.
Or if you struggle, you can use a Bulbasaur which works at Curelean Gym and Pewter Gym.
Both of these will struggle at the 3rd gym, so if you want to get a Butterfree, use a Charmander. Train butterfree up to beat the first 2 gyms, and then on you should be ok. :)

Squirtle can beat Brock, the first Gym Leader. But Bulbasaur can beat the first and second.

The best I think is Bulbasaur cause the first two gym trainers you meet are Brock and Misty, and all of their Pokemon are weak against leaf. Charmander is ok if he can leard iron tail by the time you get to Brock but is hopeless against Misty. Squirtle is probably the second best cause he can hold his stuff against Brock and have a fair match against Misty.

You should probably use bulbasaur or charmander. Squirtle isnt the best in the end. Bulbasaur levels up fats and is strong for the first 6 badges. Now charmander is hard to use because he levels up slow and is not strong on the first two badges but is good on almost all other badges.

Charamander baby but wen you get to brock or misty make sure to have a diffewrnet type of Pokemon as for me went with frist charmander and then I caught a nidoran before I went to battle brock

Use the one you favour most. I've got a blastoise now even though I usually start with charmander. I prefer blastoise and now it can defeat level 61's (as long as they're weak against water!). Just use the one you are most comfortable with.

You should use charmander but train it up good for the first two gym leaders then it will be really easy as the people who made this game tell you to use it in the walkthrough book
