Pokemon to help you before the 1st Gym

So you just started out with Fire Red (or Leaf Green), and your having trouble with trainers and the 1st Gym? Well, here are some Pokemon that can help you with these trainers, and of course, the 1st Gym.

1. Caterpie - GET IT. It evolves early, which is why I advise you to get it. Butterfree is a great teammate. Though it's weak to Rock-type, it has a non-"not very effective" attack against them, and it's Confusion. It also has Sleep Powder/Stun Spore/Poison Powder, which proves very annoying. Add in Compoundeyes, which increases these moves' Accuracy, and you got a great annoyance machine!

2. Pidgey - Not really recommended for the First Gym since it's weak against it, but after that, it's a great teammate. It's a strong attacker, and when it evolves, it becomes faster! Pidgey/Pidgeotto/Pidgeot can also help you greatly in the Fourth Gym, and in some Pokemon of other gym members (for example, Sabrina's Venomoth). Great teammate.

3. Mankey - Low Kick = Onix's Death. Seriously. Mankey is a Fighting-type, and Rock types are weak against Fighting types, and you know what that means. It's evolution is kinda nice, too. Mankey helps out against Normal and Rock Types you meet along the way (also against annoying Magnemites) as well.

4. Pikachu - If you have the patience, you may want to get the scruffy little mouse. It's obvious that it isn't for the 1st gym, but the 2nd gym facing the electric mouse means oblivion to Misty. It also helps against upcoming Flying types (which, of course, includes the mischievous Zubats in Mt. Moon). Plus, Thunder Wave is a great annoyer.

These are my most recommended, but there are still other Pokemon you can get (like Weedle and Rattata), which all have great evolutions. So it's all up to you on which Pokemon you'd like to get. Well, good luck!!
