Top 10 Best Games of 2014

7. Mario Kart 8

You'd think that Mario Kart would get old after awhile considering the series has been around since 1992 but it somehow never does. Mario Kart 8 is the latest addition to the long-running series and is probably one of the best. Nintendo regularly boasts about how this game got the highest review scores in franchise history with an aggregate review score of 88/100 on Metacritic. I'm actually a little surprised to see it didn't score in the 90's to be honest.

The game is pretty much what you'd expect from a Mario Kart title. Mario Kart 8 has a large roster of 30 playable racers (including the unlockables) and another six available as DLC. Some of the characters are completely new to the series such as Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach. There are several powerful new items like the Boomerang Flower, the Piranha Plant, the Super Horn, and the Crazy Eight which gives you a whopping eight items. That can easily turn the tables of a whole race in your favor!

There's also a new game mechanic called anti-gravity where parts of some tracks allow players to drive up walls or even onto the ceiling. If the game simply included new items and characters it might not be different enough from the previous game to justify buying but a whole new racing mechanic is a different story. Anti-gravity makes things feel totally different and can make things very interesting if you're trying to play while drunk.

Mario Kart 8 may indeed be the best Mario Kart ever, as the review scores would indicate, and that by default makes it one of the best games of 2014. It is an excellent example of an old franchise adding just enough new stuff to draw fans in while not straying from its roots. If you're a fan of the series, you will love this game. Even gamers that claim to hate Nintendo or deem themselves too grown up for such “kiddy games” still end up having fun with the Mario Kart franchise.
