Top 10 Surprise Endings in Video Games

04. Spec Ops: The Line (2K, 2012)

Considering that the game starts out as a very unique military-revenge-thriller, and the mechanism for suspending disbelief is fairly easy to engage and complete, you would think that once you got through the really challenging bits that it would have a straight-forward ending, right?

After all, Colonel Conrad has been torturing you practically from the start, so the final monologue from him and the accusation that you, Walker, are a failure absolutely makes sense and fits with the overall theme of the game.

In fact right up to the point at which Walker enters the penthouse and 'confronts' the Colonel the fabric of the story is still maintained.

And then you reach the suite and have the confrontation before the painting you still think you know what is going on - but then you approach the chair and find the dead body!

Your shattered awareness gets filled in by recollections of the events that lead up to this - and a truth that is difficult to accept largely because it contradicts what you think you know. And just when it looks like the nightmare is over, well, no, not so much really.

By the time you find yourself bleeding out in the sand there are so many questions left unanswered that the only thing that we can say is that this one is high on the list for a reason, and no matter how much explaining the devs tried to do, the answer to what it all meant did not sit well with gamers.

If there was a competition for the most disturbing of the shocking endings this one would probably win that, hands down.
