Top 10 Surprise Endings in Video Games

08. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Rockstar, 2002)

When Vice City started out the vibe that it delivered was totally Crockett and Tubbs - that is who Tommy and Lance were - yeah. The dynamic duo in pastel colors.

You just knew that they were brothers from another mother. Tighter than tighty-whities. We cannot stress this enough, they had a relationship that was two-parts bromance, one-part respect.

They battled drug lords, they battled cops, they triumphed over pimps, and eventually they were to face off against the Mafia itself.

And you knew that when that moment came, nothing could stand against Tommy and Lance and win.

Then the mob showed up - Tommy had the plan - it was all unfolding like he said - and then that knife appeared in his back as Lance betrayed him.

'Sorry Tommy. This is Vice City. This is business,' Lance explained.

'You sold us out...' Tommy realizes.

'No,' Lance replies. 'I sold YOU out, Tommy. I sold YOU out.'

That bastard! How could he do that?! But he did do that and any gamer who says that they saw it coming is probably lying or deluded.

What followed was an epic battle of protecting the real money in the safe while exacting revenge on the mob soldiers and the capo who set you up more than once!

Taking out Lance caused a mixture of feelings - after all you had only just found out he had betrayed you so you had to struggle with lingering feelings of attachment and outrage. But killing that loser mobster? Oh that was pure pleasure.

While the betrayal by Lance certainly qualifies as a surprise ending, consider this: the game was created intentionally with all sorts of references to the movie Scarface - so most players were expecting it to end that way, with the death of Tommy at the end.

So when it doesn't, you get a double surprise ending! Lance's betrayal, and Tommy surviving! Now that is quality entertainment!
