I want to start playing the Resident Evil games. Is it necessary to start with the first one? Is it an on going story?

I would recommend it if you want to know the entire story as parts of the game wont make sense if you haven't played the others. But it's no required to play the others. Hope I helped and please rate my answer
Well, there is a story but you don't NEED to follow them... It give you more of a background...
You can if you want....there are a lot of games. Playing the fourth then the fifth will help. It doesn't matter. They will tell you what happens throughout the game.
You don't need to follow the whole story but if you want to learn what happened and how all of it began to happen. I would try to follow the story.
Re 0, re, re 2, re 3, re veronica x, re 4, but all require a gamecube, ps2 or older
But re4 for ps2 has a history which covers 0-veronica x
I think it would be better if you had an idea of what the story is before you play resident evil 5. Well if you want to save some cash instead of buying all of the resident evil games you could just buy resident evil 5 and it contains a file that is the complete history of resident evil. Very brief though. Hope I Helped.
Acctally there is a story, but Resident Evil 5 has a built in file, just go to Library, that go to Files then select "History of Reident Evil" it will tell you every thing that happened before Resident Evil 5. If you do want to start at an earlier game, I would suggest starting at Resident Evil 4. And the games basically are just movies that come after the acctual movies. Everything that happens in the games is linked to the movies in some way or another, and they often make references to something that happened in the movies, so no need to worry about getting confused about the story line. Hope this helps.
It all starts with Rebecca Chambers and Billy in resident evil 0 or resident evil chronicles
It is as it explains more of the history of the game, but all games carry their own story line to a certain extent, it's not imperative that you start with the first one will just let you no whats actually happened
