No you go to the previous checkpoint in that mission if you're near the beginning of that mission then yes.

When you or your partner dies, the game resets to the last check point. So it's best you make sure you heal her when she needs it cause ether way, you die or she dies. The game will have to be restarted from the last check point.

If you or Sheva, and in one of the missions Josh, dies then the mission restarts to the last check point. So if you are at the beginning of a mission and havn't gotten to a check poit then yes, the mission has to start over from the beginning. Hope this helps.
