Skull collection for dummies?

I have played and completed halo 3 on the normal setting and am now going through it again on the next difficulty. My question is how do you collect the gold and silver skulls? What are they for? Thank you

You only have to find the skulls and pick them up and hold them for about 10 seconds to collect them. After you do that, you have to exit out of campaign to activate/deactivate any skulls you did or did not have by going into the campaign options. The gold skulls make the game harder, but increase your combat multiplier (if you have scoring on). The silver skulls don't make the game harder (except for the blind skull), but they make the game more interesting.

First, before you start the campaign, go to edit campaign options. Turn on campaign scoring. Always start at the beginning of a level with a skull you need or want. If you start at a checkpoint, they will not be there. Skulls are found in hard to get to places. This site has a guide to where they are found at. What skulls do depends on it's type. Gold skulls give you gamerscore when you pick them up. They make the game harder and/or more fun in a certain way when you activate them. Silver skulls do not give you gamerscore, but they make the game different like Gold skulls. There are 9 Gold skulls and 4 Silver skulls. If you collect a number of them, you get Hayabasa armor. 6 skulls for the body, 9 for the shoulders, and all 13 for the head.

Hold rb when you finone and run around for like 10 secs for the game can pick up your acheivement. They're used for meta-games as scoremultipliers, or as a challenge.
