Steering

I just started playing and every time I come to a turn I use the handbrake and I go straight into the wall, every time! Is there any way to improve the steering?

Yeah by not using the handbrake. It is a simulating racing style and not like Need for Speed where you can drift every corner with ease. To turn efficiently you have to slow down according to the degree of the turn and then accellerate through the turn. This is proper driving, what you do in real life.

Brandon 2006 answered:

Never use the handbrake in turns that are not 160-180 degrees. Use your normal brake and slow down before entering the turn to a amount that will allow you to take the turn smoothly. When you begin exiting the turn smoothly let off the brake and put pressure on the gas.

Yea.....DON'T USE THE HAND BRAKE

I expect you've realised by now the handbrake isn't really your friend. Do what Brandon said, do the majority of your braking before you try to turn. Keep on the throttle as you turn, but be gentle or you'll over/understeer depending on your car of choice. In a rear wheel drive you can stick your ass out for aesthetic effect, take a picture, feel good, continue the race...
