My family got lost in a perilous cave near the temple of light where could they be? I've looked everywhere for a cave and am unable to find one

This is probably "The Rescue" quest. And it's not your "family", it is your son/daughter. You must speak with you spouse to start the quest to find your child. Then proceed to Hobbe Cave.
