If you are talking about the item that randomly appears, then those are stickers. You must collect them to amp-up your characters during story mode. OR! There is a trophy you can unlock after collecting 300 DIFFERENT stickers. In case you are wondering, to look at/use stickers, go to the gallery, then go to "Trophies and stickers" then press "Sticker Collection"and your options are there! I hope this was helpful to you. Those are Stickers they are not required but you can visit the Sticker Gallery with the stickers you have and just play around with them.
