There are # ways I now so far, you have to save them (examples are peach/zelda), you defeat them in battle(examples are chazard and bowser), you find them as trophies(ivysore is one), and it's just part of the story that you have to use them(alot of examples-mario,kirby,pit,luigi,fox,falco,ness,luces,pikachu,sumes[and zero suit], R.O.B,and more]).

Just play along through the story. Some, however, you have to do specific things. To get Ganondorf, you have to rescue Link and Zelda when in Subspace when they are turned into trophies.

And some you have to fight them after beating the S.S.E. In hidden doors in levels( examples there are 3, wolf, jigglypuff, and toonlink).

Well you have to beat them in subspace emissary! Like lucario. But some of them just join you as you go.

Well you first would have to beat a level and they will join by themselves once they can trust you. Usually all you have to do is play as them and complete a level and they should join you.

As you go through the storyline you will automatically aquire new characters,it takes some time though to get everyone around 4 hours
