Question for Super Paper Mario

I'm on mario and I am in the first water zone like level three-something and I have just gotten bowser but I can't beat the water zone.....i have gotten the smash jump pixie already!!!

Return to the save block in the first area. You'll notice some metal poles to the left. Pound them so they look like this: up, down, down, - up, down, up.
