Do you need to have played the first super mario galaxy?

Is it better to have played the first super mario galaxy before buying super mario galaxy 2, or does it not really matter?

In honesty you really don't need to have played the original Galaxy as the storylines are different. They teach you the controls in #2 so you could play 2 before 1. I personally liked going through the original as it helped with the gravity effects and how to move. It really comes down to you.

Volke answered:

Nintendo always tries to make it's games as accessible to newcomers as possible, so you should be fine Smile

DiamondLucario answered:

It really doesn't matter at all. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the same thing, except it has different levels, and the way you get to them is different.

Guest answered:

no you should be fine

kidfox answered:

There is no reason not to have both though. True, you don't need one to get a firm handle on the other but they're both great games.

Oyhitar answered:

Beating Super Mario Galaxy 1 does make Super Mario Galaxy 2 a lot easier. They're both great games, but you don't need to play Super Mario Galaxy 1 to be good at Super Mario Galaxy 2.

DarthXenon answered:

It is recommended but not required. If you played SMG1 then SMG2, you will find some things are the same or similar, like bosses, jump techniques, powerups, music, to name a few.

Matt77 answered:

You don't really need to. It does help a bit but they explain all the controls at the start of SMG2. Just do what you want.

rogerroulet answered:

Well, See is how I have the first. Probily if you want the story of how it all started.
