When you unlock luigi can you play 2 player without having to be the same player

No,When playing "2 Players" one person is mario or Luigi and the 2nd player will control a star to collect starbits.
No luigi helps occasionaly to get you stars. 2 player means one player is mario and the other is a star bit collector person.
You can unlock luigi, but cannot play his file with mario on it(as a playable character), the 2player mode is only for stunning enemies, collecting starbits, help you jump higher, and some other stuff like that. Hope this helps!!
